# 2 - Giving full effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi

What will we see ?
• HNHS encourages Māori students to have a strong sense of cultural identity
• Greater representation and incorporation of te ao and mātauranga Māori across all curriculum areas
• Strong appreciation and understanding of tikanga and kawa relevant to HNHS
• Greater representation of te ao Māori around school campus
• Increased use and fluency with te reo Māori amongst staff and students
• Increased student numbers in Te Ao Haka and Te Reo Māori in junior and senior school
• Increased retention of Māori students through to Year 13
• Reduced achievement gap between Māori and non-Māori
• Improved consultation with whānau , hapu and iwi to better understand aspirations of Māori community
How will we make progress towards this strategic goal ?
• Te Ao Haka implemented in year 10 ( 2024 ) and year 11 ( 2025 )
• Mātauranga Māori incorporated into all curriculum areas
• Staff te reo Māori language learning continued
• Physical changes to the school campus signal that Māori values and beliefs are sustained at HNHS
• Consultation forms part of existing hui and new opportunities developed to collect whanau voice
• Establish Kāhui Ako - Ka Hikitia role to support the realisation of this strategy at HNHS
• Local story initiative – history of HNHS ( area and school ) well understood and shared with school community
How will we measure success ?
• Number of staff undertaking te reo Māori language learning
• Number of students involved in Kapa Haka , Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Haka programmes
• Evidence of incorporation of mātauranga Māori across all curriculum areas and year levels
• Physical changes include completing the whare ( Kahurangi ), pou at the school entrance , new block signage and classroom displays that value te ao Māori
• Retention rates are consistent across all ethnicities
• School documents reflect bicultural heritage including strategic plan & annual reports
• Staff and students can articulate an understanding of the land , history and heritage of HNHS
