STONE AND DISTRICT U3A All the latest from Stone and District U3A Bowling Matters Crown Green Bowling has been very popular again this summer with excellent attendances at all four groups and much lively play of a good standard even when conditions got tricky thanks to the hot, dry spell. Two competitive matches were played against Barlaston Bowls and Tennis Club at Meaford. Both proved to be very enjoyable afternoons with the home team notching up a narrow victory on each occasion. The bowlers also supported the Stone in Bloom process by providing background activity during the judging in July. Back to business September saw the resumption of many group activities such as Sequence Dancing, Yoga, Gentle Exercise, Drawing and Music Appreciation. This last group is particularly in need of new members and meets alternate Mondays at Barlaston Village Hall at 2pm. The venue has good acoustics, ample parking and comfortable seating. If you think you would enjoy listening to a varied programme of orchestral music including some major choral works, do contact Gareth Jones on Tel. 01782 372349 or email [email protected] m. Genealogy-Who were your ancestors? As well as the newly formed Golf and Patchwork and Quilting groups, it is hoped to begin a Genealogy group this month. No doubt many have watched the BBC programme ‘Who do you 28 October/November 2013 think you are?’ and have felt inclined to trace your family origins as a consequence. This group will offer help if you don't know where to start. Peter Lyell has traced his family back to the 16th century and wants to share his expertise to assist others on their journey through time. A number of talks will be given to enable group members to extract information from census returns and parish records so a family tree can be created. There is a wealth of material available such as wills, war records, emigrations etc which provide the means to build a picture of how our forefathers lived. Having your own computer would be helpful but is not essential as free access is available at most libraries. If you have any interest in this topic, please email Peter at [email protected] or ring him on Tel. 01782 911012, where he will provide further details. Canasta This group, which meets on Tuesday afternoons at Aston Village Hall, is still on the look out for new members to play this card game. Experience is not necessary and you will not be left on your own until you are confident you can cope. Meetings commence at 1.45pm to allow setting-up time, and end at 4.00pm.
