28 SEWER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM | Grey. Green. Clean. Collection System Reliability Program These projects help ensure that waste and stormwater are safely delivered to our treatment plants 24/7. In 2018 construction was completed of several large sewer projects throughout the City. The Marin Street Sewer Project in the Bayview was completed to repair aging infrastructure and replace the facilities with larger pipes to accommodate population growth and the additional wastewater flows from Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, Pier 80, Pier 70, and Mission Bay. Rehabilitation of the Drumm & Jackson Streets sewer boxes, that were constructed in 1913, was also completed. The Drumm & Jackson sewer boxes serve approximately 25% of the City by collecting and transporting combined wastewater by gravity en-route to the Southeast Treatment Plant. In 2019 construction will begin on the Force Main along the Embarcadero to provide system redundancy of this service area. Nearly half of the sewer replacement work on SFMTA’s Van Ness Improvement Project was completed in 2018. The project will include installation of 20,200 feet of sewer lines to address earthquake vulnerability and minimize potential service outages. This is one of several interdepartmental projects we are partnering with City family on to improve our wastewater system while minimizing construction impacts to the community. In 2019 the SFPUC will partner with SFMTA on Geary Rapid, L Taraval, and Better Market Street Improvement Projects’ to upgrade aging sewer pipes while the City performs above ground improvements to maximize City resources and minimize disruption to the communities we serve.
