UPDATE ON GLENVIEW PARK DISTRICT
REFERENDUM INITIATIVES
ICE CENTER RENOVATION THE GROVE IMPROVEMENTS
The cold and windy weather on Saturday, November 2 for
the “Leave Your Mark” steel beam signing event did not keep
people away! We ended the morning with over 400 signatures
on the steel beam, which was installed in the northeast corner
of our new NHL rink. These are exciting times at The Grove where we are thrilled to
report, construction at the Interpretive Center was completed
at the end of January. Bluestone + Associates started exhibit
installation shortly after that. Interpretive panels, a life size
Megatherium illustration, a giant ground sloth replica skeleton
and a refurbished Alaskan brown bear were installed. Aqua-
moon began testing the new aquarium and the multi-habitat
“Turtle Island” in preparation for moving the animals into
their new homes.
Warmer than usual December and early January weather
allowed for great progress on our parking lot, exterior walls,
stair installations, and the start of roofing.
Our construction team set up a large crane to put in place over
10 tons of equipment, including an air dry cooler on top of
the building. A refrigeration skid for the mechanical room was
lowered inside.
We also completed the foundation pour in the Great Hall and
the second floor as well as put in place framework and foun-
dation work for the spectator seating over our old Main Rink
and new NHL Rink. Masonry walls continue to go up inside the
building. What was once two long, open spaces underneath
our spectator seating sections have been divided into new
team rooms.
As you look around the Interpretive Center, you’ll notice more
of Robert Kennicott in it with hands-on activities for kids. Ken-
nicott’s family settled on the property that is now The Grove.
Robert became a noted explorer, collector and naturalist who,
among his other accomplishments, was on the staff of the
Smithsonian Institution and founded the Chicago Academy of
Sciences.
While construction took a bit longer than anticipated due to
delays with utilities, inspection schedules and other unfore-
seen circumstances, we would like to thank everyone for their
patience and understanding throughout this process. Please
join The Grove on Saturday, February 22 from 10 am-5 pm for
our grand re-opening celebration. There will be tours, activi-
ties, refreshments and a few surprises!
