THI S DAY I N HI STORY : THE BATTLE OF SHI LOH

By David J .
The Battle of Shiloh was an early battle but a major factor in the Civil War . The Battle of Shiloh , also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing , happened when the Confederates launched a surprise attack on the troop commanded by Ulysses S . Grant , who would later become president of the United States .
The Confederacy drove back the Union troops , but the Union did not retreat .
The battle lasted from April 6 , 1862 to April 7 , 1862 . During the first day , the Confederate men began to defeat the Union troops , but things started to change when the Confederates lost their highest ranking general , Albert Sidney Johnston . Albert was shot in the leg by a bullet that hit an artery , which caused him to bleed to death quickly .
Another Confederate General , Pierre G . T . Beauregard , took over and stopped the advance . Though the Union troops had been forced to retreat two miles , they were able to stay in formation . The next morning , Grant was joined by reinforcements under the command of General Don Carlos Buell . This increased the number of Union troops , giving the Union a big advantage .
After a lot of attacks , including the taking of the Hornet ? s Nest , The Peach Orchard , and the Bloody Pond , the remaining , tired Confederates trudged back to Corinth , Mississippi . The casualties were a great number . The Union had 13,047 casualties , while the Confederates only had 10,669 . However , the Union had more men remaining . The Union had won a major battle .
