This year we celebrate 35 years of the ciclovia’s birth
and 19 years of the cicloruta’s birth. It is important to remember how it all started. Therefore, it is important to
say that the ciclorutas was a project developed by the
IDU between 1995 and 1997 to encourage recreational
space. It invited people the city to use the ciclorutas as
an alternative way to move around the city. Besides this,
the following year’s city mayor, Enrique Peñaloza, supported the project’s growth with his campaign “Por la
Bogotá que queremos”, making the clicorutas not only a
recreational topic, but also a part of mobility in the development plan. As a consequence, Bogotá became the
first city in Latin America to have an alternative transport system, in addition of the traditional way of cars.
