What is needed

The five design principles

These principles should be viewed as lenses through which we can consider change and address the challenges faced by the whole workforce .
In addition to addressing diversity and safeguarding , the principle of quality is emphasised . This focuses on the creation of workforce strategies and systems that deliver support precisely when and where it is required .
For coaching , this underlines the importance of training highly skilled tutors , assessors , and coach developers who can effectively deliver learning support . Rather than simply replicating predefined behaviours in a tick-box fashion , the emphasis is on understanding and applying the principles of coaching practice to your specific context .
This means providing coaches with an extensive menu of learning methods to select from , giving them the freedom to choose what to consume , and when and where to consume it .
Ideally , this approach should be supplemented with support from coach developers that is inclusive , inventive , and personalised . Given that this represents a cultural shift for most coaches , initial support is crucial . Coaches will need guidance – handrails rather than handcuffs – to help them transition towards greater autonomy in their learning .
The five design principles aim to rethink traditional approaches to workforce development , focusing on creating a supportive , diverse , high-quality , sustainable environment that prioritises safety and enhances the overall experience for all involved .
