/D 1796 STATE OF RHODE ISLAND APPOINTMENT
SIGNED BY GOV ARTHUR FENNER .................. PH $300-400
Lengthy early 19th century letter from New London, CT, to a
doctor in Newport, RI, about a variety of physical symptoms
and doctors’ diagnoses and treatments. Dated July 4, 1810,
addressed to Dr. Thomas Hartley of Newport, Rhode Island
asking for the doctor’s assistance. He writes, in part: “took a
ride with my daughter Loring to Middletown, and there meeting
with an old Physician, by the name of Osbourn, I consulted
him with regard to my Cough, and he prescribed an Electuary,
which entirely relieved me...” Partial fold separations and small
loss from seal tear affecting some text on page three, else very
good condition. (University Archives LOA).
Partly printed document signed by Governor Fenner of Rhode
Island, one page, 12½”x7¼”, dated May 7, 1796. Appointment
of James Vinson to serve as justice of the peace in the town of
Portsmouth in Newport County. Countersigned by Secretary
of State Henry Ward. Intact paper seal of the State. Light foxing,
corner creases and small paper loss in blank area along a vertical
fold, else very good condition with a bold Fenner signature.

Three large boxes filled with vintage ‘instant ancestors’ photos
from small to large with some in early photo books. Loads of
cabinet cards and other types with images of groups, men,
women and children from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s.
Scores of photographers and studios represented. Possibly some
famous people can be found. Various conditions but mostly
fine.

Handwritten letter signed ‘Jon. Russell,’ 7¾”x9¾”, 3 pages
conjoined, dated November 26, 1812, Washington. Free
Franked to The Honorable James Fenner, Providence.
Separation at fold, slight tear on front fold at bottom. Partial
black wax seal, some minor paper loss due to the seal. ‘A
collector’s notes’ written in pencil. Jonathan Russell was the
charge d’affaires to Great Britain during the War of 1812;
Fenner was governor of Rhode Island up until the year before

D 1811 BOSTON CITY EXPENSE & INCOME REPORT

Printed circular of expenses and income for Boston during
1810-1811, including rent from Faneuil Hall. Titled ‘General
View of the Current Expenses of the Town of Boston, from
May 1810 to May 1811’ and measures 7"x11", dated May 22,
1811 and signed in type by the Town Clerk, Thomas Clark.
Document gives income for the town of Boston (exclusive of
taxes) for the same period, as well as income from Faneuil
Hall. Expenses total $101,278 which include schools, lamps,
oil and lighting, town watch, bells and clocks, improvements
of widening streets, overseers of the poor, etc. The income which
totals $12,423 includes rent of Old State House, Cellars under
Faneuil Hall, licenses to Hackney Carriages, Rent of Stalls in
front of Market House, etc. An early docket on the verso states
‘John Hancock’s old papers’ although the Patriot and
Declaration Signer died in 1793. Overall age toning, center
horizontal fold. Fine.

Shepard/Member Congress’ and
postmarked ‘Wash City/Dec 18’.

typical light stains and nicks,
