1931 VINTAGE LIFE PRESERVER RING FROM
‘S.S. WASHINGTON’ ............................................ PH $350-500
A vintage life preserver ring taken from the French ocean liner
the S.S. Flandre, also known as ‘Carla C’. Ring meas ures 24"
in diameter and 3" thick. Stenciled along circumference in black:
‘CARLA C / NAPOLI’. Still carries original rescue line rope
attached. The Carla C was the first French ocean liner launched
after World War II, and used exclusively as passenger ship
until it was destroyed by fire in 1994.
Vintage life preserver ring taken from the American Luxury
Liner, S.S. Washington. Ring measures 30" in diameter and 3"
thick. Off-white colored, has ‘S.S. WASHINGTON / NEW
YORK’ stenciled around its surface. Original rescue line ropes
intact and in great shape. Overall condition very good, with
only minor wear and staining. S.S. Washington launched in
1932 and used as a luxury liner until the second World War
when it was commissioned for usage as a troop carrier.

1950s VINTAGE LIFE PRESERVER RINGS &

Four vintage life preserver rings, each from a different ship
with its own history. Rings from following ships: S.S.
HOMERIC (Panama), 30" diameter, 1950, from the Home
Lines (aka S.S. Mariposa); M/N CIUDAD DE PEREIRA
(Buenaventura), 30" diameter, date unknown; EMPRESS OF
CANADA by Canadian Pacific, 20" diameter, 1961; OCEAN
MONARCH by the Furness Lines, 15" diameter, 1951. Lot
also includes: small souvenir ring from the Queen of Bermuda,
8" diameter; one half of a ring, likely souvenir, from the French
Liner, Ile de France, 12" diameter; and a modern life preserver
from the Disney Cruise Line, signed by 'Captain Tom / 2/3-05'
in black sharpie. The Homeric is by far in the best of shape of
the vintage rings, and probably the key to the lot.

LETTER ................................................................ PH $200-300
Letter signed ‘V. Stefansson.’ on Copley-Plaza hotel stationery,
Boston, Massachusetts, January 12, 1929. To [Charles] Belden,
he writes ‘Don’t forget to write the authorities about the
‘Reading with a Purpose’ booklet on Polar Exploration’. That
was a series of courses published by the American Library
Association. Light ink offset and library receipt stamping at
letterhead. Fine condition. (University Archives LOA).
