AUTUMN | WINTER 2019 SCHOOLS/FILM The Colony aka Une Colonie Tuesday 05 November When one of the popular girls at her new school invites Mylia (Emilie Bierre), over to help with her homework, she cautiously takes it as an opening. Insecure, in a new town and with few other offers, Mylia has to evaluate how much she’s willing to sacrifice for social inclusion. ‘A Colony’ begins, rather bleakly, with a group of hens pecking one of their own – a weaker one - to death. Mylia explains the incident to her precocious younger sister Camille (Irlande Côté), saying that it's the natural order for the strong to pick off the weak. Mylia has internalised a history of being bullied and that could happen again in her new school. But she finds some comfort in her bond with Jimmy (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie), an artsy outcast 22 The Source Arts Centre who lives with his grandmother on a local Indigenous reserve. The film looks to tackle the notion of belonging – Mylia as a newcomer to the town and Jimmy as a member of a First Nation community whose history as a group colonised by Europeans, also has his sense of belonging challenged. The performances are all impeccable and the depiction of high school is every bit as grim, embarrassing and just plain realistic as intended. ‘A convincing young cast breathes life into an anxious age’.- Hollywood Reporter Dir.
