It ' s in the name , this day marks the celebration of all things Yorkshire . The date marks multiple historic landmarks , including the emancipation of slaves in 1833 .

August 2nd will mark numerous celebrations of cultural pride and heritage across Canada , including British Columbia Day , Heritage Day in Alberta , Natal Day in Nova Scotia , and New Brunswick Day !

Abai Day ( Kazakhstan )
In rememberance of the Khazak poet , composer and philosopher , Abai Qunanbaily ( 1845 - 1904 ). He aided in the cultural reformation of Europe and Russia .

11 th - Royal National Agricultural Show ( Queensland , Australia )
Also known to the locals as Ekka ( short for exhibition ), this annual show takes place on the second or third Wednesday of August , and lasts for 10 total days of festivites . These include fireworks , a grand parade , food , rides and prize-winning animal showcases .
National Liberation Day of Korea
Celebrated in both the North and the South of Korea , this annual holiday marks the Victory over Japan Day , which brought an end to 35 years of Japanese occupation .
Indian Independence Day

First celebrated in 2002 , this date marks the invention of the phonograph by Thomas Edison in 1877 .
Obon ( Japan )
Sometimes referred to as the Bon Festival , this Buddhist celebration is an important part of Japanese culture , aimed at commemorating ancestors , whose spirits are believed to visit their relatives during the time of Obon . Obon lasts for a number of days , with celebrations taking place at different times in accordance with different calendars . The most common time to celebrate is mid- August , and it is one of Japan ' s major holiday seasons . Traditions include hanging lanterns on houses to guide spirits , special dances , and making offerings to the deceased either at home or in a temple .

Thrift shops can be treasure chests full of hidden gems , it ' s just a matter of finding them . The day is nationally recognised in the USA , but thrift stores ( or charity shops as they ' re often known as in the UK ) can be found all over .
