Abstract : Living in the 21st century and in a world which develops more and more and whose changes are obvious , school gets new dimensions and obligations . Students are different from previous generations , and this encourages the teacher to adapt her / his teaching techniques , methods and style . The teacher always has to bring something new and stimulate his / her students . It is a very challenging task to make the students forget about their “ fear ” and boost their confidence . One of the secrets of this challenge can be the use of educational games . Educational games can be one of the most efficient methods which can help the students improve , practise , learn their communication skill ( be it oral or written ) in English . The classes that contain games become more interesting for students ( especially for primary students ) because they love them , and games support their effort and their attention . Teaching has demonstrated the game efficiency and its importance in learning English . It does wonders in the class , and it helps the students be active and part of the teaching process . The students can be themselves , they can express their ideas using words in different contexts and the words they use are real . Games are natural , creative , and authentic . Educational games are different from the other types of games as they have a clear purpose ( to accomplish certain educational finalities ), a specifically designed content , an educational task , rules , and specific elements . Playing , students act practically and systematically , enriching their knowledge , learning and developing from many points of view . Due to the complexity of educational games , they can be part of the achievement of various educational aims . The games help the students develop physically and mentally . A child learns if he / she practises , imitates or experiences , and this kind of learning is the one that lasts . The game , if properly used , can be the medicine that cures the boredom of a class . It can be used anytime and during any lesson . Monitored by the teacher , the students are responsible for their process of learning , developing their knowledge , and acquiring new skills . Educational games focus on one , two , three or four skills : reading , writing , listening , and speaking , skills which mingle and / or interact one with another , not only in teaching or evaluation , but in educational games , too . It is important for the teacher to know when and how to use games so that the students can learn , practise , and improve their English . Sometimes games work miracles and the only witness is the teacher who can see it happening . She knows the psychological need and the benefits of games . Games teach us many things : rules , adaptation , interaction , goals , and what is more important is that students learn English , and there are times when they do it without realizing it .
