Through its very effective Elevating the Safety Net program, L. A. Care, headed by CDU Board of Trustees President John Backes, awarded eight new medical school scholarships to students from underrepresented communities. As the nation’ s largest publicly operated health plan, L. A. Care has been very active in fighting health care disparities the best way possible: placing its bets with highly talented students ready, willing and able to join the fray.

The initiative increases both the number of students in medical school as well those would not be able to attend because of financial hardship. This year’ s total increases the number of L. A. Care Scholars to 56, with the vast number coming from communities of color.
