4-Year Medical School Celebrates Its Second Student Cohort with a White Coat Ceremony( continued)
investiture.
Following a stimulating invocation by Elder John Patton, Esq., CDU General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Carlisle introduced the day’ s keynote, Dr. Etsemaye P. Agonafer, Deputy Mayor, UCLA / CDU MD program graduate and a community engaged researcher dedicated to advancing health equity and justice for vulnerable individuals and populations. Dr. Agonafer characterized the day as one of celebration as she reminisced about her own experience in the program.
The White Coat ceremony, she noted, was the first step in advancing to the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath. She encouraged the students with a few signpost themes: Community, Leadership, Excellence and Integrity, Diversity, Compassion, Advocacy and most importantly, to treat patients with compassion as fellow human beings. Her presentation was well received, and her warmth and support were appreciated. In his remarks Dr. Eleby Washington expounded on what receiving a white coat means, i. e., the beginning of a journey of commitment to the essence of medicine.
