How was developing the document as a unified, cohesive, well-integrated curriculum achieved? residencies. The components of the curriculum were developed to meet the program objectives and Drew COM Mission. The goal is to graduate medical students who are physician leaders that promote wellness, provide care with excellence and compassion, and remain committed to transforming the health of underserved communities in South Los Angeles and beyond.
How did you organize the work to complete timelines and milestones?
The work was organized by course teams dedicated to specific courses in the curriculum who met together and using the program objectives developed individual course objectives, teaching methods and initial methods of formative and summative assessment. The EPCC subcommittees were formed to work with the course teams, evaluate the course templates, and present them to the EPCC for approval. A timeline for submission of various components of the courses was provided to course teams and ongoing meetings between multiple course teams were organized and supported to develop an integrated and coordinated curriculum. A curriculum management platform – New Innovations-- has been purchased and is being utilized to map out the curriculum. A learning / educational platform – Osmosis-- has been purchased to aid course teams in the development of their courses.

The major challenge was the identification of the pathways that led to understanding of unique attributes various team members had to contribute
A unified, cohesive, and well-integrated curriculum was achieved by continued review of the various components of the curriculum to ensure alignment both vertically and horizontally. The EPCC reviewed the components of the curriculum, the course teams reviewed the components of the courses, consultants were utilized to review the program and its various parts to ensure alignment with the LCME standards. Revisions were guided by the combined input of various reviewers with final approval of curriculum components by the EPCC.
What do you see as the curriculum’ s strong points?
The strong points of the curriculum are the longitudinal courses in the development of clinical skills, building an understanding of the social determinants of health in medicine and society and the development of research skills in health care disparities in the foundation of research course. The CDU Advantage is the foundation on which the curriculum is built. The single most important strong point of the curriculum is the faculty, staff, administration and community forming the CDU Village Dedicated to building and supporting the 4-year MD program. How did you take advantage of the University’ s strengths based on CDU’ s years of academic instruction and previous subject matter accreditation?
We relied on the knowledge and skills of the CDU’ s academic support structures to guide us in meeting the requirements for accreditation and compliance with LCME standards.
How much of CDU’ s uniqueness given its mission and history became a factor in DCI execution?
The uniqueness of the CDU Mission and Advantage. Its mission and history formed the foundation upon which the curriculum and program was built. The dedication of the faculty, staff, community, and community partners were essential in development of the DCI.
