Tier 1, Curriculum: A Conversation with Dr. Glenda Lindsey

Dr. Lindsey is COM Assistant Dean for Medical Education and Chair, DCI Curriculum Committee
Briefly describe how the curriculum development process was organized and executed.
It takes a village to build and support a community. The CDU COM Village came together to support the building of the 4-year MD program. A team approach became the hallmark of the curriculum development process. The EPCC( Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee) led the curriculum team. The EPCC organized a series of retreats which brought together faculty, staff, and administrators to brainstorm and build the foundations of the curriculum based on the CDU Advantage while envisioning the Ideal Drew Graduate.
How did you organize the effort to maximize team members’ skills and assets to the benefit of a welldeveloped final document?
The first step was the formation of the LCME steering committee by the Dean and FAL( Faculty Accreditation Liaison). The steering committee developed the LCME subcommittees, each tasked with a subset of LCME standards to focus on and answer the questions in the DCI. There was a series of retreats and meetings of the subcommittees leading to the development of the DCI. The initial document was reviewed, edited and submitted to the LCME. The LCME granted us candidate status and commented on areas of the standards needing more focus on. Those areas were assigned to the various committees to review and update. The final document submitted reflected ongoing updates and revisions to enhance the program and meet the LCME standards.
How did you accomplish satisfying the complex design criteria to meet the LCME’ s expectations?
The LCME standards defined the required components of the curriculum and the various other foundations needed to support a medical school in meeting the standards leading to accreditation. The program objectives were the initial building blocks, developed from the AAMC physician competencies, CDU Advantage, and the Entrustable Professional Activities( EPAs) expected of medical school graduates entering
