Sevenoaks 25: IB Art Exhibition | Page 10

Tom Hobbs
Throughout my Art IB , I have explored how strong tonal contrasts are able to influence meaning – particularly in the communication of a specific message . With techniques used during my GCSE , I started off the year with a lino portrait , focusing on accentuating the intricate details of the subject ’ s face and shoulders . I have always had a fascination with architecture and building development , so I moved forward towards large structures . I looked at interiors and public spaces , creating points of perspective within the piece , aiming to include the viewer within the composition . I have thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with a variety of techniques .
After the original lino , I moved into techniques I hadn ’ t used before , or at least used in the same way . Through the Comparative Study project , I began to experiment with formal qualities I learned about , using scale to communicate meaning – whether for ostentatious , reflective or shocking purposes . Some of my larger-scale pieces were the most enjoyable for me , as before I did not have the tools to complete them . Exploring meaning and tone has educated me on the importance of a complex composition , and how this can influence the viewer ’ s mood and opinions . The appreciation I have developed for art has grown hugely throughout the IB course , enriched by the creation and analysis of my pieces of work .
