My work focuses on depicting emotion through monochrome portraiture . In order to do so , my style has changed and developed during this course . I began exploring elements of the human body in quite a realistic nature , with my first piece of a closely depicted eye . I continued exploring different media , moving onto etchings of hands and reductive linoprints of the human body . Each piece aimed to capture emotion , whether through expressive marks or different positions of the human body .
As I continued to explore different forms of media , and different emotions , my style and theme evolved to depicting vulnerability through portraiture , as I focused on the face as a whole , rather than individual components of the human figure . I still concentrated on a realistic approach , exploring pointillism , finger painting and continuous line drawings .
Although I found it was possible to capture emotion in a realistic manner , I found it limiting in that I was restrained by only portraying what the human figure and face could show . Instead I wanted to capture a feeling and journey of thought rather than one individual emotion , which led me to explore a more abstract approach . I began experimenting with a palette knife , still continuing in monochrome but drifting away from the traditional style of portraiture , instead creating pieces which encapsulate more of a mental portrait and thought processes . I staggered the creation of the pieces so they would all represent a different time and mental state , thus collectively telling a bigger story than individually . Having explored multiple aspects and approaches to portraiture , my style , interests and perspectives have definitely developed throughout this course , continuing my love for art .
