Tariq Westcarr (OS 2019)
Gap year
Since leaving Sevenoaks School last year, I have had several
months to think about life; the past and present, and the
direction of my artistic career. This journey has given me
the time to reflect on myself as an individual, taking into
consideration how each and every circumstance during this
time has impacted my psyche. Thus I decided to conduct
an investigation into self and emotion. What has been
birthed from this process is a visual expression of emotional
conflict, highlighting the emotional gradients that human
beings encounter through everyday experiences.
Inspired by the ethereal self-portraits of Norwegian artist
Henrik Uldalen as well as the album DAMN by Kendrick
Lamar, my artwork deconstructs the complexities of the
human mind, depicting one’s emotional responses to reality,
internally and externally.
