Hello Circle K International! My name is Michael Zhou and I will be serving as your new 2014 Students Team Up To Fight Hunger Ambassador (or STUFH for short). I’m a second year currently attending college at the University of California, Berkeley in the Cal-Nev-Ha District. I’m thinking of obtaining a degree in Chemical Engineering with a possible double major in Material Sciences & Engineering. My choice in this major is to help out with my end goal of entering research with fuel and gas. I really want to make a big impact on the world and I think one of the best ways would be to research and develop cleaner and more efficient fuel sources for the future. I hope that if I put in enough effort, I will be able to make a substantial positive impact on the future. My weekly routine usually consists of attending class on weekdays and service projects on the weekends. Service is in my blood and it’s always an honor to serve and give back to the community. Other than service, my hobbies include video games, Rubiks cubing, and hanging out with friends. One of my favorite service projects that my home club hosts is a local soup kitchen called Loaves and Fishes. Unlike conventional soup kitchens where you hand out food or serve the guests dinner, at Loaves and Fishes you have the opportunity to sit down with the guests and talk to them about life!
STUFH is a non-profit organization that focuses on trying to put food in the mouths of those who need it most. Every year students leave their apartments and dormitories discarding accumulated food just because it will go bad. STUFH recognized that this food in college campuses was completely being wasted instead of being donated to local food kitchens or food banks. In 1999, about a thousand pounds of food was collected by these food drives. Now every year with the help of the multiple organizations we are collecting around 1.1 million pounds of food in a year! One of STUFH's main initiatives is to allow more college students opportunities to join the cause and fight hunger. STUFH offers a very simple three step process to collect thousands of pounds of food and these steps are always available to you! The three steps are ridiculously easy!
Step 1. Empty food bins will be dropped off in your college dormitories one week before school ends. Place them in locations that have a lot of foot traffic!
Step 2. Have some PR regarding the event and allow students to drop off their unopened non-perishable food items as they head out or move out.
Step 3. Full food bins are picked up by the food bank or if you have the resources deliver them by yourself to local banks!
