Service Worth A Glance Issue 03 - December 2013 | Page 7

Hello to all the life changing people reading this newsletter! I hope you all had a wonderful fall semester. As we dive into this holiday season, it’s easy to think about all the wonderful new gadgets, books, and movies that are on your wish list. It’s always nice to be on the receiving end of favor, but in the world of our Kiwanis Family giving is so much sweeter than receiving. I challenge each of you to continue giving to others this holiday season.

My favorite project to do during winter break has always been centered on food. Back in Key Club, our chapter was able to sponsor a family for Christmas. The family we sponsored had two small children, and lived in what many would call a shack. All of our members signed up to bring a different item for the dinner or a gift for the family. On Christmas Eve, the officers delivered the meal and presents to the family. It was an amazing experience seeing the pure joy on the faces of the children, as well as the parents. Our Key Club chapter was able to bring happiness to that family; happiness that without our small gesture, may not have been possible in that degree. During my freshman year in Circle K, I was able to help distribute food from a mobile food bank. The families were lined up when I arrived on site, and the line grew until the mobile food pantry pulled in. As the families went from station to station, I handed out bags of beans, rice, and other non perishables. These families were able to take home food that would hopefully be able to last them until the next month when the food pantry arrived again.

Food insecurity is a reality that many people face on a day to day basis. During this holiday season, I challenge you to step up and help fight hunger. While you may be able to enjoy a nice holiday meal with loved ones, the fact is that many families are not. If you are able to change that actuality, you will receive so much satisfaction. Not only will you be able to give to families in need, you’ll be able to receive so much more in return.
