Equestrian Life in Sequim

Robbin Hill Park

Sequim has many horses (as well as horse owners), and small horse ranches are found throughout the valley and in the hills. There are many equestrian activities and events in Clallam County and a lot of great trails nestled between Sequim and Port Angeles. Robin Hill Farm County Park is one of them. Located just north of Hwy 101 between Dryke and Pinnell Roads, the park is bordered on the north side by the Olympic Discovery Trail.

The park offers several miles of beautifully maintained trails for hiking, bicycling, dog walking and trail riding. Of the 195 acres of forest, meadows and wetlands, 20 acres are used by the WSU Cooperative Extension program for pasture management, agricultural research gardens, and special water conservation and composting programs.

The trail system is divided into walking trails, with firm dirt and gravel footing, and equestrian trails, with deeper and softer footing. Bicyclists, joggers and walkers are welcome on either trail, as are leashed dogs. All users should give way to horses by stepping to the side of the trail. Also avoid sudden movements and talk to the rider. If you are with a dog, be aware that stepping too deeply into the woods with a dog sometimes spooks a horse more than just stepping off to the side a little ways, while staying in full view of horse and rider. Horses should remain at a walking gait or slow trot, especially in the meadow which has hidden holes and surface irregularities.

The park is for all to enjoy; there are only a few simple rules to be aware of, and they all point

point to the same thing — leave the area as clean as you found it:

- Horse trailers are allowed only in the Dryke Road parking area. Be sure to pull all the way around and park perpendicular to the gravel strip alongside the pavement, leaving room for others to pull alongside you.

- Please pitch any manure that your horse drops at the parking lot into your horse trailer to dispose of at home.

- Clean up after your dog.

- Remove all picnic debris and trash.
