Question: " Does a warm, dry nose mean your dog doesn ' t feel well or is that just a myth?"
Answer: A warm, dry nose does not necessarily mean your dog is sick. The idea that a healthy dog must always have a cool, wet nose is largely a myth. A dog’ s nose can become warm or dry for many perfectly normal reasons. For example, it may be dry after sleeping, especially if your dog has been curled up with its nose tucked against its body. Warm weather, indoor heating, exercise, dehydration, or simply getting older can also temporarily change the moisture and temperature of the nose. Rather than judging your dog’ s health by its nose alone, pay attention to the whole dog. A healthy dog should generally have a normal appetite, energy level, breathing pattern, and bathroom habits. A dry nose accompanied by lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, difficulty breathing, or other unusual behavior may warrant a call to your veterinarian. There are also conditions that can cause persistent changes to the nose, including allergies, sun exposure, autoimmune disorders, or certain infections. So, a warm, dry nose by itself usually isn ' t cause for concern. Your dog ' s overall behavior and physical condition are much better indicators of whether something is wrong.
