GOLF
The OS Golf Society has enjoyed five meetings so far this year , with one more in October . Our first , in April at Sweetwoods Park , was played in dry weather but the course was showing the scars of a horrendously wet winter . This did not deter the Quirky Quartet – Chris Walker ( OS 2004 ), Bob Boatwright- Smith ( OS 2001 ), Chris Kempton ( OS 2002 ) and Pete Croft-Baker ( OS 2004 ) – from cleaning up the team prize and the first and second individual scores . The nearest the pin was won by Ashwin Jolly ( OS 2001 ), making his first appearance for the society , and the nearest the pin in two by Elliott Webster ( OS 1995 ).
Early June saw us at Tandridge Golf Club for a match against the Old Alleynians , our only one against another team . By careful manipulation of the score cards by the undersigned , this friendly was declared a draw . Next year , this fixture will be at Littlestone GC .
Our biggest turnout was in the Ashdown Forest at Crowborough Beacon GC in July , for our first official bring-a-guest day . Seven guests enjoyed this excellent heathland course with its glorious southerly views to the South Downs .
In August , a new fixture at Wrotham Heath was much enjoyed by all of us , many of whom were playing there for the first time , and we look forward to returning next year . A few new names on the rostrum this time
with Mike Hirst ( OS 1970 ) winning individual honours , Duncan Mackie ( OS 1975 ) and Neil Petch-Smith ( OS 1983 ) getting nearest the pins , and a four-ball , which surprisingly included me , won the team prize .
In September we returned to the championship course at Hever where , once again , the Quirky Quartet hoovered up the team prize and first two individual prizes . Mike Hirst prevented a clean sweep by winning nearest the pin and longest drive .
The OS Golf Society always welcomes new faces to these midweek fixtures . There are no qualifications needed , just a knowledge of which end of a golf club to hold . If you are interested in joining us , do please contact me .
