D uke of E dinburgh’ s G old Award
Eleven Upper Sixth succeeded
in achieving their Gold Award
this year and 40 intrepid
members of the Lower Sixth
successfully completed
their practice and qualifying
expeditions.
Walking
After carefully planning their expedition routes, practical training
for the hikers began with a night-time orienteering challenge in
Knole Park in February. Wet and windy weather tested participants’
waterproofs, whilst the dark provided a good navigational challenge
in preparation for heading to the Brecon Beacons at Easter. Much
to everyone’s delight (and surprise), conditions there were glorious
throughout; crystal-clear skies and bright sunshine led to stunning
panoramic views from the summit of Pen y Fan at 883m. Teams
proved their fitness by racing along the ridge line in impressive
time, alongside developing their campcraft and teamwork
throughout the venture.
Weather conditions for the qualifying expedition to Snowdonia
were not so favourable. Moody grey skies and extensive rain
meant that wet weather routes were in operation around Cadair
