Idris, but all four teams responded impressively to the challenging
conditions. A particular highlight was one team’s creation of a
‘DofE for Dummies’ instructional video to achieve their expedition
aim, which demonstrated clearly not just how much the teams
had learned since September, but also the real sense of fun and
camaraderie enjoyed by participants over the expeditions.
Canoeing
Local training for the paddlers took place once again this year on
the Medway. Practical boat handling skills were combined with
navigational techniques for the water, and an early capsize in the
chilly November conditions was a salutary reminder to all about
waterproofing kit thoroughly and the importance of having spare
dry clothing!
Participants put their skills to the test when they journeyed to
the River Wye in April for their practice expedition. The sun smiled
down upon the teams as they adjusted to moving water conditions,
quickly picking up the skills and experience necessary to journey
unaccompanied on the river. All three teams sailed through their
qualifying expedition on the River Severn over May half term,
relishing the peace and wildlife along the river whilst working
together to achieve their expedition aims. Participants showed
significant maturity in responding to capsizes, completing a night’s
wild camp and looking after injured team members; all can reflect
with satisfaction on how they acquitted themselves, demonstrating
resilience, independence and strong collaboration throughout the
four-day adventure.
