ARMY VETERAN from Pg 6
in Howard Lake ranges from 90 to 110 members.
In addition to Johnson, as the commander, the
other offi cers include an adjutant and a secretary/
treasurer. Johnson and the other offi cers do a lot of
the organizing work. When he needs help, Johnson
enjoys “getting on the phone” and reaching out to
other members.
Another major function is to keep the American
Legion restaurant and bar running smoothly.
According to the manager, Charlotte Bruns, this is
not always easy because “a lot can go wrong.” Bruns
describes Johnson as “wonderful to work with,” and
“very helpful and handy.” She stated that she is very
grateful to Johnson for “making her life easier.”
Johnson describes most of his 23 years of
membership as “very busy” with work and family.
When he retired from full time work in 2015, and a
new Post Commander was needed to replace the one
who was retiring, he decided that he was in a position
to donate more time to serving in a new capacity.
The American’ Legion’s website at www.legion.
org describes the Legion’s history and mission as
follows:
“The American Legion was chartered and
incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic
veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.
It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service
organization, committed to mentoring youth
and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our
communities, advocating patriotism and honor,
promoting strong national security, and continued
devotion to our fellow service members and
veterans.”
