STATION 8
Ceiba Trail
Life and Death
On your way, you have already seen some
trees that have reached the end of their
lifecycles or could no longer tolerate the
conditions of the rainforest. After falling,
these trees allow more light to enter,
giving other trees the opportunity to grow.
Since we are in a reserve, removing the
wood of fallen trees is not allowed.
However, this resource is taken advantage
of by the fungi that decompose the trees,
the other plants that grow on them, insect
larva, and many other living creatures.
What can you find living on the fallen
trees?
“Gavilán” Tree
Pentaclethra macroloba
Did you know… The most common tree in
Sarapiquí is the “gavilán” (Pentaclethra
macroloba). In the forest clearings left by
fallen trees, you can try to find young trees
of this species. Its open fruits and seeds are
common.
