STATION 7
Ceiba Trail
A sacred place
In a place like this, under the foliage of a
Ceiba tree, people perform sacred
ceremonies in some parts of Mesoamerica.
Because of its majestic nature, this tree is
venerated by many indigenous groups
who call it “the tree of life.”
The tree in front of you is more than 200
years old and harbors lots of life. More
than 1000 plants from 150 different
species grow on this tree and some
animals, like bats, use its trunk as a refuge
during the day. There is more
biodiversity in this tree than in 4 acres
of a temperate forest.
Lesser Sac-winged Bat
( Sarccopterix leptura)
Use the trunk of the Ceiba as a
refuge, where they sleep arranged
in ordered rows to favor their
camouflage
White-necked jacobin
( Florisuga mellivora)
The female uses the Ceiba's fibers to
build her nest on palm leaves .
Did you know… The fruits of the Ceiba
pentandra contain a very soft fiber, like
cotton, which some people use to fill pillows
and some hummingbirds use as a “mattress”
in their nests.
