This very amenable flatfish posed beautifully for the camera . I used a new , 40cm long ‘ scope ’ lens which allowed me to keep my strange bubbly noises at a distance from the animal . Flatfish are common to see at Newton ’ s Cove at night , and when approached slowly and carefully , make for fascinatingly charismatic photo subjects .
Tompot blennies are a staple subject for divers under Swanage pier . Having the good fortune to dive frequently in this location over the year , the seasonal changes in their lifecycle and behaviour is remarkable . They will change from shy and skittish in the spring months , to territorial and brooding during early summer , to curious and fearless as autumn sets in .
