The Montagu ’ s blenny is a tiny little character that flits around , in and out of the crevices on the stone wall before Swanage pier . They are far outnumbered by very similar looking shannies , but are blessed with more vivid colouring and a wonderful sparkling crown . This is a shot that took many attempts to achieve as they are super skittish and never stay still , patience is key with these lovely little critters
This adult male shanny was busy territorially guarding the next generation of unborn eggs in a hole on the main stone wall at Swanage pier . When eggs are involved , you can be sure that the fish will come and go , but always return to its egg cluster sooner or later .
