Memories of a club trip to Connemara , Ireland
Cave , the Chasms , the Beacon ; SS Havsø and Maen Piscar pinnacle ; SS Missouri ; the Fangs and the wreck of the Editor and SV Primrose Hill ; and MV Segontium .
Do you ever use charter boats ?
Yes , but , like everyone , our trips have been waylaid by Covid . In the past we have visited Scotland , Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly , Ireland , the Canary Islands , Malta and Gozo , and the Red Sea .
Does the club do any diving with a purpose ?
We always aim to dive with a purpose whether it ’ s training , development of members , exploration of new sites , or to check on changes and naturalisation of wreck sites . As for project work , we get involved in dive site and beach cleans to collect general rubbish as part of the Keep Wales Tidy initiative . This has been extended to diving and collecting snagged and discarded fishing tackle , in particular lead weights , which have the potential to pollute the environment . As our club is well known to the local fishermen , we are often asked to help with recovery of snagged or lost gear .
Any claims to fame ?
In August 2016 , the club helped discover and lift a 110-year-old Welsh slate wagon from the depths of Llyn Padarn in Llanberis , Snowdonia . It was handed over to the museum run by the Llanberis Lake Railway . Then , in 2018 , we were one of several local dive clubs to participate in an underwater
field school organised by the Nautical Archaeological Society as part of a project Commemorating the Forgotten U-Boat War around the Welsh Coast 1914-18 . We dived SS Cartagena . One of 60 Canadian-built steel trawlers designed as minesweepers , she survived the war , only to sink on a delivery voyage in 1928 . The weekend event gave us , and members of the public , the chance to get involved in a variety of activities related to underwater archaeology .
