Griff Rhys Jones – a tribute
CLUBFOCUS
Training at the Plas Arthur Pool
What is the club planning next ?
We want to expand the dive programme to include more of the expeditions and holidays that members want . We need to explore the opportunities that arise from funding and grants to improve the club ’ s assets and training capability . We need to build membership , by expanding our try dive , recruitment and training programmes .
Red Sea trip from 2009
What training is planned ?
It can be difficult getting engagement and commitment to training from members , but we ’ ve had some new , experienced members join who seem keen to get involved . We have 11 Assistant Diving instructors ; six Open Water instructors ; and one Advanced Instructor , but availability can be a problem . Most training is associated with bringing new members into the sport , starting with
Ocean Diver training at the local swimming pool at the Plas Arthur Sports Centre in Llangefni . That said , most of our divers are undertaking some sort of training and development , as progression is so important in personal and branch development .
What courses are planned ?
We have an Ocean Diver course planned for January to April 2022 , then a Sports Diver course from April to May 2022 . Our trainees will be ready for open water as the local weather , water clarity and temperatures improve . Training for Diver Leader and above is undertaken during routine diving activities and special SDC events , of which we run .

Griff Rhys Jones – a tribute

Rhosneigr SAC would like to dedicate this feature to the memory of our fellow member Griff Rhys Jones , who died on 3 December 2021 . A skilled engineer , he served the club as Equipment Officer , acting as a ' main cog ' in club life for more than 20 years . Many of our core members shared memorable dives with Rhys , and were touched by his calmness , patience and perfectionism . Rhys will be sorely missed by everyone in the club – may he rest in peace .
Anything else you ’ d like to tell readers about ?
Based on such a beautiful coast , it ’ s not surprising that we are often contacted by visiting divers , who ’ d like to join in our events . This provides an opportunity for us to showcase some of our best dive sites and to socialise . In 2021 , we had visitors from Scotland , London , Buxton , Cumbria , the Midlands and Norway . We want to build on relationships that we already have , with clubs both local and further afield , and to encourage other clubs to contact us to plan joint ventures for diving or training . This includes clubs who wish to come and dive in North Wales , or clubs looking for participants in events they have organised . We are also keen to collaborate on arranging expeditions in the UK or abroad .
Looking to the future , the club has tended to be in the hands of some of the older members , but we have always striven to turn this around , so that the younger members take an active role in the investment and development of the club for future generations .
