ELLEN R. CLAYTON, RN, CNE
Chair and Instructor, Nursing; B. S., Towson University; M. S., University of Maryland
The nursing program prepares nurses to meet the challenges of the nursing profession in the 21st century. The philosophy and focus emphasize the ethics of care, critical thinking, and a spirit of inquiry in education, practice, service, and research. Upon successful completion of all degree requirements, graduates are eligible for the National Council Licensure Examination( NCLEX-RN) to become registered nurses.
Students enter the nursing major upon admission to the University and are given program-specific guidance throughout the curriculum. Clinical nursing courses begin in the third year and engage students in dealing with real-life issues in the world of healthcare. Small classes and clinical groups afford rich opportunities for students to build one-on-one professional mentoring relationships with nursing faculty. Students complete over 700 hours of clinical experiences at local hospitals and communitybased settings to ensure breadth and depth in their applied nursing education. Examples of hospitals where students complete clinical experiences include Union Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Sinai Hospital, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Franklin Square Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center, and University of Maryland Medical System. Examples of community health experiences include Baltimore County Public Schools, homeless shelters, and assisted living facilities. Leaders in the nursing community value graduates of Stevenson’ s nursing program for their strong clinical skills and professionalism. The Stevenson nursing program also has an outstanding reputation among employers in Maryland and beyond.
