TWIN POWERS · OFFICIAL PROGRAMME not much else , seemingly . He refers to his brother ’ s previous experiences at first .
“ Sam had his kids ,” said Alex . “ Obviously , we speak a lot about it and his experience with it . I think what ’ s good with the kids is when you ’ re a kid , you want to be a racer . I ’ m one of the lucky people that gets to do the dream job . When I was younger , I wanted to race bikes and now I ’ m getting to race bikes . Really I should be happy every day , because you ’ re doing what you wanted to do . But that ’ s not the reality of how it works because no matter what you get , you want to do better . So then I had the kids and it just makes you think , it doesn ’ t really matter to them how I get on with my bike . It makes no difference to them . They ’ re just little kids . All they want you to do is change their nappy , feed them a bit , give them a little bit of attention and they ’ re happy , really .”
The home spun philosophy continues , pleasingly . “ You never really know what makes you happy . You think you do . I like playing golf . So , you go play some of the nice courses , then at the end of the round you think , ‘ I should have enjoyed that more .’ That ’ s just life , isn ’ t it ? With the kids , you can really enjoy it . They change all the time and it ’ s great . I ’ m lucky anyway . My racing career is up and down , but my home life has been great . My Missus is great . We ’ ve got a great relationship , and that ’ s important . Even now if I ’ m having a tough time with racing , which I have had a lot … last year was a disaster , I was injured and it was mentally hard work … but at home I was still happy . If you ’ re stressed for two weeks or happy for two weeks , it doesn ’ t make any difference . You might as well be happy . No matter what
happens . You can ’ t change it , so you might as well be . When I ’ m at home , I might as well be happy with Corinne and do something and have fun , rather than sit there and just be pissed off . I learned that .”
Lowes now lives very close to Donington Park , in a semi-rural location . Maybe a bit like his native Lincolnshire , but far more convenient for transport links , and close proximity to his brother . “ It ’ s perfect !”, he says . “ I couldn ’ t live in a big city . I can go out the house . I can go running . It ’ s nice and quiet . I think the wife likes it , which is important . If the wife is happy … happy wife , easy life . So , we like it there . I could live on a golf course in Portugal , but I don ‘ t think Corinne could !”
That ’ s moving us on to Lowes ’ true personal obsession in life - which is obviously golf . I ’ ve never met anybody that ’ s got a job Alex ( or Sam ) that plays as much golf . Is that true ? “ To be fair , that ’ s probably true , but I ’ m not obsessed with golf ,” said Lowes , somewhat incongruously . “ Not yet . I think I will be when I retire . Now , I just enjoy it as a bit of a getaway . If you play golf properly , it ’ s three hours , chatting to your mates and focusing on what you ’ re doing . You sort of have a bit of a switch-off from life . Now I have slightly less time ( to play golf ). Corinne doesn ’ t mind me going out training but if I try and say for the third day in a row , ‘ I ’ m just going to do nine holes …’ I can ’ t have the same response . It ’ s not really classed as work .”
Has the fact that Alex and Sam have always raced in different classes put any distance between them over the years ? Silly question I suppose …?
