OFFICIAL PROGRAMME · TWIN POWERS
It ’ s Alex we are talking about here , not specifically Sam , but the bond is so strong between them that almost every topic involves a shared Lowes experience . They are different people , of course , but it is sometimes hard to see where one ends and the other begins - except in their very different international career paths .
It ’ s been a long time since the Lowes boys raced against each other , or since Alex won BSB , so what ’ s been the biggest change in all those years for Alex now he is a WorldSBK veteran ? ( He ’ s in his tenth season and has 229 WorldSBK Race starts , 29 podiums and two wins under his belt ).
“ A few changes ,” agreed Alex . “ I think I ’ m quite a strong character . I ’ ve been in a lot of situations . Made a lot of mistakes . A lot of situations with teams working with people . Like life , not just our sport but sport in general , you change . You understand your perspective and you improve yourself , really , or you try to improve . But most of what you improve really is on the bike , because on the bike , you ride like you ride - and in the garage you ’ re in the zone . You ’ re doing what you ’ re doing , and that ’ s your life , almost . But you realise that off the bike , your experience is meeting different people . You act different , I guess . I ’ m a lot better off the bike . Since I ’ ve got together with Corinne , maybe . She ’ s been good for me .”
How many years has that been with Corinne , Alex ? “ Eight years , so , I ’ m not doing bad , really - she ’ s good for me ,” he stated again , with certainty . “ I started to enjoy life more . I have bikes to do with me , bikes to do with my brother , which is good because bikes are good - when it ’ s going good . And bikes are bad when it ’ s going bad . So , you sort of live the roller coaster with your brother as well . I have all the good things and then all the bad . It was never going well for both of us . It was just stressful , because we are so close . I live his career a bit through him as well . Then when I got with Corinne I started enjoying a bit more . When I was doing BSB and stuff , I never really enjoyed it . I didn ’ t have time to enjoy it because I was just looking at the next race and focused on what you were doing next . It was then I started enjoying it a lot more - later .”
Working the promotions arena , having been a Monster Grid girl , Corinne understands the more glamorous side of racing , as well as the hard yards . But in the real world Alex agrees that she is very grounded , which helps ground him too . “ She ’ s got a lot of patience ,” he stated . “ It ’ s an important attribute when you ’ re married to me . Patience has to be quite strong . It ’ s true . She ’ s a very good person . In racing , also in life , you look at other people and she just sees the good in most things . If I start complaining about something , she ’ s not bothered . She just tells me to shut up .”
That ’ s the sainted Mrs . Lowes we ’ re talking about here , who is married to one Lowes , but has a shadow husband thrown into almost every other aspect of family life .
The biggest change for them both since they first met is marriage and then kids - twins of course . How has that most recent change been for a guy who seemed to race , play golf , go watch his brother race , train and do
