Ever wondered if and how your seemingly small contribution impacts the lives of others? Is it even worth it to give towards a charity event, for example, if you don't see the difference that your contribution makes? Well, the answer to that question is a big YES! Giving is always a good idea, especially when you don't expect something in return. But luckily, giving can give you a sense of purpose and fulfilment, so it's usually not only the recipient who benefits from your giving - you do too!
This year Karlien's AKSA committee is taking part in an initiative that aims to give back by donating a wheelchair to a deserving recipient. So how, you may ask, will we do this? The hostel will collect bread tags and bottles caps, which, once collected, can be recycled (so not only does this
benefit people, but the environment too!). For about every 15kg of bread tags and 150kg of plastic bottle caps a wheelchair can be donated. And, for every 350kg collected, a specialised wheelchair can be donated. That's a lot of plastic items! And while it may seem like it will take a long while to collect, if everyone did their part by keeping the plastic tags found on loaves of bread and the bottle caps found on milk cartons and cold-drink bottles, for example, then it may go quicker than you think. In every floor's kitchen is a box where people can throw their plastic items in so that Karlien can also play a part in giving back. It's an effortless way to give back - especially for those of us who are too busy to physically go to orphanages, old age homes and so on. Every little bit helps.
