That time of the year for Karlien residents has already come and gone so fast! It’s a time when Karlieners stay in for a whole weekend decorating each corridor according to their chosen theme for that year. This year, from ‘post-office’ and ‘Alice in wonderland’ to ‘baywatch’ and many more, each corridor’s ladies worked tirelessly to ensure that their corridor’s decorations look the best.
Gangversierings, however, requires a lot more work and planning than what meets the eye. Days (or even weeks) ahead of the ‘gangversierings’ weekend, the ladies from each corridor take the time to have name boards made for each Karliener’s door, to have group photographs taken for the corridor entrance, to buy all the
necessary materials (such as paint, paintbrushes, glue, rope, etc.) that might be needed, to take
individual photographs for each lady’s door, and the ladies also plan how to decorate the recreation rooms, the kitchens, laundry rooms, toilets, bathrooms and the corridor itself.
As soon as the ‘gangversierings’ weekend comes, the ladies are ready to start hanging things, painting things, to get their hands (and feet) dirty, as well as to bond with one another. With spirits high and music pumping throughout the weekend, it takes a team effort to get the work done so that everything that has been planned can be executed well and be finished within the time limitations. Even though plans and ideas may change as each corridor goes along, the end result is always something to behold - something that each corridor can take pride in.
