Summer is just weeks away and English Heritage ’ s exciting events programme is in full swing at Audley End House & Gardens , with a range of events to delight both children and adults .

A brand new event – Horses through History – will take centre stage over the early May bank holiday weekend

on Sunday 30 April and Monday 1 May . This event which will explore the art of equestrianism from three different periods in history and visitors will get to meet merry monarch Charles II for a horse race with a difference , greet Georgian hounds and be in the audience for a lively Victorian gymkhana .

Later in May , Kings & Queens will run throughout the half term from Monday 29 – Thursday 1 June . Children will receive a right royal welcome as they ’ re taught how to master the ultimate curtsey , bow like a pro , and entertain without being a fool .

The first weekend in June ( Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 ) sees the return of one of Audley End ’ s most popular events , Joust for Elizabeth . This is entertainment which is fit for a queen and visitors will marvel as they witness the ultimate display of chivalry – two of the most skilful knights in the Kingdom , mounted on their magnificent steeds , battling for love or eternal sorrow .

Visitors will also be able to join the Queen ’ s loyal followers to learn the rules of Elizabethan courtly etiquette and witness the majestic falconry as birds swoop overhead .

Then on Sunday 18 June , Audley will play host to its Classic Cars event - rev your engines this Father ’ s Day and treat Dad to a charming collection of vintage vehicles on display . Put your pedal to the metal and discover what it takes to take care of your dream motor . Suitable for 0 – 60 and beyond ! Meanwhile , every weekend

until September , Audley End ’ s Victorian Service Wing , Stables and Nursery will come alive with characters from the past for the Life Above and Below Stairs weekends .

And after all the excitement of the blockbuster events programme , visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll around Audley End ’ s vast grounds and , grab a bite to eat in the café and enjoy some retail therapy in the shop .
