Mercer & Hughes Veterinary Surgery
Mercer & Hughes Veterinary Surgeons have been serving the animal community around Saffron Walden for nearly forty years and have seen many changes over that time .
We started as a traditional farm and equine veterinary surgery with some small animal work and have developed over the years to a three centre small animal practice . Our branches are at Saffron Walden , Stansted and Great Dunmow .
There has been a huge rise in veterinary corporate chains over the last few years but Mercer & Hughes remains proudly independent . Mercer & Hughes is run by four partners , Ilse
Pedler , Stephen Flood , Seamus Mone and Becky Kitchen and we employ nearly sixty staff . One advantage to being an independent surgery is that we run our own on call service so your pet can be seen at a surgery they are familiar with and by vets that know them , we also have dedicated night nurses to take care of hospitalised patients overnight . Our Saffron Walden surgery has been awarded Veterinary Hospital status and we pride ourselves in trying to provide the highest standards of veterinary care . Our surgeries have the latest diagnostic equipment , including X ray , ultra sound , ECG and endoscopy as well as a laboratory at each branch which provides same day results to minimise delay in treatment .
We are a veterinary nurse training centre and have a fantastic team of nurses who run clinics throughout the day as well as initiatives like puppy socialisation classes . These puppy preschools are run at all three branches where puppies less than 15wks can come to socialise with other puppies under the care of our veterinary nurses who also give advice on training , feeding and worming . Our free nurse clinics also give advice on dental and dietary problems and Deputy Head Nurse Jackie Morgan who is qualified in Feline behaviour is happy to give advice .
We are involved in many community projects and have organised charity dog walks raising money for organisations such as Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and the PDSA . We host free evening talks for clients , the latest being a post hibernation evening for tortoise owners which was great fun !

Saffron Walden ( Afternoon ) WI
Saffron Walden ( Afternoon ) WI was founded on the 15th November 1995 with 20 members and still meet on the third Wednesday of the month in the afternoon .
There are now 42 members and meetings are held in the Garden Room , Jubilee Gardens , in Saffron Walden . The meeting is run by a committee , two of whom have been part of the group since the beginning . Amongst the members are a few who have been regularly coming for a good few years .
There is usually a speaker and the talks are very varied touching on a variety of subjects from ‘ Beekeeping ’ to ‘ Evacuees of World War Two ’. There is always a break for a very welcome cup of tea with lovely homemade cakes . A popular raffle is held during
the afternoon . Sometimes there is a competition , a quiz , a noisy beetle game or a lively singsong . Outings are arranged throughout the year and are very well attended . One of these was a trip to the Waldringfield Boatyard in East Suffolk in 2016 where a lovely lunch was enjoyed at a farmhouse after which was a trip on the river Deben . A garden meeting and a Christmas dinner are arranged once a year . A Coffee morning is held annually to raise funds and this year will be held on Saturday , 3rd June at the Garden Rooms . There will be various stalls , plants , books , cakes , bric-a-brac , tombola , raffle and refreshments .
Meetings are very informal , lively and fun and visitors are always welcome . Local WI groups meet together regularly for special events , such as the centenary celebrations .
