Tutorial - Painting by : Nik Rafin
Hi friends, I wish you are well and healthy. Okay..now..Shall we keep the fire burning...
We have completed one third of the 'ingredients' in my type of COMPOSITION.
This is the forth 'INGREDIENT'-BALANCE
BALANCE-Without it, things would fall apart...
Basically, BALANCE in art is the arrangement of shapes and colors relative to the FOCAL POINT in
such way that everything in the painting looks visually equally strong and intact.
Balance is very important as it helps bridging different colors and shapes in a painting successfully.
It produces 'excitement' for the eyes..thus letting the eyes move around the painting smoothly.
We know that the Focal Point has a very strong color and very high in contrast thus making it VERY
POWERFUL and DOMINANT; resulting in a one sided view and quite rigid. Too much 'ENERGY'
focused on just one area...and the eyes keep 'sticking' to it. Less story to be told this way..
To make it more lively is, we need to distribute/channel its energy in term of color and shape to
the other parts of the painting. Doing so would result in a well balanced painting.
Sounds complicated...how to do that??
2 ways of achieving it.
First is to BALANCE the FOCAL POINT's Dominant Color(s) or any COLOR THAT GRABS YOUR
ATTENTION FIRST (Contains the most energy) and...
Second is to have shapes around the FOCAL POINT placed in more or less equal weight across
the painting. Remember the 'Rule of Thirds'?..Use it as a guide to ROUGHLY 'patch' color(s) and
shape(s) on the optimum zones.
First: BALANCING THE COLORS
1)Virtually place the RULE OF THIRDS on the Focal Point
2)Identify the DOMINANT COLOR of the FOCAL POINT or any COLOR THAT STANDS OUT MORE from
your Subject (FOCAL POINT)
3)Choose any color(s) from its TONAL RANGE
4)'Patch' the selected color(s) from the TONAL RANGE and place ROUGHLY on any/all of the
optimum zones.
Use the Glazing Technique to paint over selected area(s) or you can just paint over a certain
shape(S).
