SECOND: BALANCING THE SHAPES
1) Imagine the RULE OF THIRDS and place it over your Focal Point
2) Make sure other shapes around the Focal Point in the painting are ROUGHLY inside the
Optimum zones
3) Should one of the zones is clear of shapes and looks 'heavier' on the other side, you may want
to paint in NEW SHAPES in (anything that can reinforce the Focal Point) or select any EXISTING
SHAPE(s) from the scene/photo and RE POSITION accordingly....or..just change the ANGLE of the
photo of the scene entirely until all shapes are placed in equal 'weights' visually.
NOTE A: Unless the subject/Focal Point is Super Big and Bold, Balancing the shapes and colors
around it might not be necessary. Doing so could produce an 'overcrowded' painting.
NOTE B: Balancing the colors and shapes should be planned and painted carefully. Otherwise you
would jeopardize the FOCAL POINT-creating too many unnecessary attractions that can
distract the eye.
NOTE C: Use Photograph as reference, not to copy! Remember you're the director and you have
the power to place any elements that attracted you and move them around to make your
statement. The RULE OF THIRDS can be very handy to achieve that!
Its time to digest what have been explained...all the best..I'll see you soon.
