Castle Cary
“ We have talented players , but the week in week out commitment is difficult for them ,” said club coach Ben Parker .
“ The economy in a rural area like ours means we are competing with paid work – its play or get paid for several of our squad and we can hardly criticise players who want to earn sizeable amounts of money on weekends . But it does of course put us in difficulties trying to look ahead to predict playing levels not just season to season , but currently week to week . It is difficult but the entire committee is behind the guys and everyone is being flexible to see what can be done to help . The players really appreciate those efforts .”
The opposite is true for youth rugby though with a thriving series of age groups from under 5s through to Colts .
Some of the age groups are incredibly popular – the current under 14s squad totals more than 25 which is creating a selection headache ! It is also a sign that the medium term future for Castle Cary is looking very positive .
The club is also part of the RFU “ All schools ” initiative working with nearby King Arthur ’ s secondary and looking to set up links with other nearby schools to encourage students to take up rugby at school and then transfer to their local club .
“ The reason the floodlights are so important is that they will serve our entire club and indeed we ’ d like to extend their use to the whole community ,” said Clifford .
“ Lighting up two pitches will stop wear and tear , enable training throughout the week and is a very visible sign of our presence and our success in terms of numbers . We really believe the project is one that will enable our club to look forward to a positive future and to secure rugby in a town where we have had a presence for more than 125 years .
“ With a forward looking committee , great facilities bringing in a healthy income and strong mini and junior sections , the club is focussing on the senior side in order to look forward for another 125 years !”
