RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Seeing the light
A big month for Castle Cary RFC as
they conclude a year-long project to
build floodlights at their home in east
Somerset.
The club raised the £40k needed
through grants from recycling contractor
Viridor, Mendip District Council and a
huge array of events, fund-raisers and
families and firms sponsoring individual
cubes of concrete.
“It was a huge project for us,” said
Club Chairman Simon Clifford. “We
are a relatively small club but in terms
of facilities and enthusiasm we punch
64 Issue 65
well above our weight. From towing cars
to selling sweets, the entire club pulled
together to reach our goal.”
The lights were switched on by
a local rugby supporting family and
cheese-making company Barbers, with
club stalwart Nicky Barber pressing
the button, and British Lion and Welsh
rugby mega star Derek Quinnell as
special guest.
Other local firms were vital in terms
of supplying goods and services well
below cost price.
“It’s a huge thank you from all of
us at Castle Cary to our local firms. We
couldn’t have done it without them,”
said Clifford.
The season is challenging for the red
and blacks with several injuries hitting
a small senior squad from pre-season.
The club is currently looking to recruit
seniors as a matter of urgency.
Currently sitting at the basement of
Somerset Premier One, the club has just
the one win from the season so far.
