INTO AFRICA
Into the clouds: Malawi’ s Nyika Highlands
Crossing the border into Malawi, the landscape changes dramatically. The heat and dust of the Luangwa Valley gives way to cool air, rolling hills, and a horizon wrapped in mist. This is Nyika National Park, a highland plateau soaring over 2 000 metres above sea level, and one of Africa’ s most surreal landscapes.
Imagine Scotland’ s moors in Africa, golden grasslands, nodding wildflowers and roan antelope scattered across the hills. Solitude is the park’ s greatest treasure, with days passing without another vehicle in sight.
Nyika is perfect for walking or cycling across its wide, rolling grasslands. Roan antelope stand quietly against the vast horizon, orchids bloom close to the ground, birders scan the skies for the rare blue swallow, and anglers try their luck in Chelinga Lodge’ s trout-filled dams.
Culture is woven into this land. At Chigwere Cultural Village, dance, drumming and weaving reveal the enduring bond between the communities and their highland home.
