The principal provider of storm-related aid services is Manatee County Emergency Services. They
will respond earliest to the hardest hit areas. It is likely that areas close to the Gulf will require
attention before Rosedale. Also, it is common practice for emergency service vehicles (fire, EMT,
ambulances) not to respond until wind speeds have decreased to the 40 mph range.
Rosedale volunteers will become active when:
County resources are unable to respond in a reasonable time frame, and
The “event” has subsided to the extent that the volunteers are comfortable about the safety of
their family members and home.
For the preceding reasons homeowners need to take responsibility for their own safety. Stormrelated assistance within Rosedale is intended to assist homeowners to prepare for, protect
themselves during, and recover following a disastrous storm. It also will, to the extent possible,
assess injuries and, consistent with Florida’s Good Samaritan Law and the availability of capable
volunteers, offer first aid if Manatee County Emergency Services are unable to respond in a
reasonable period of time.
Elements of Rosedale’s planned disaster assistance are described below.
1. Rosedale’s Storm Disaster Planning
Annually, homeowners will be advised of the availability of and asked to review the Hurricane
Guide published by the Sarasota Herald Tribune. It is distributed in the newspaper on the last
Sunday in May and can also be downloaded from the Magazines section of their web-site at
http://sarasotaheraldtribune.fl.newsmemory.com/ssindex.php. A hurricane guide for Manatee
County is contained within the Rosedale Homeowner Welcome Package and can also be picked
up at no charge from other sites, e.g. the library and post office.
American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid courses are available for Rosedale residents. In
Addendum C of the Rosedale Homeowner Welcome Package find the attached list of those in
your association who have completed the First Aid course and are current in their certification.
2. Rosedale’s Storm Preparation Assistance
When a hurricane is imminent, volunteers from the associations who have implemented
Rosedale’s emergency plan may be available to assist in such things as securing lanai items.
Because Rosedale is not located in a flood plain, residents are not to go to a shelter during a
storm but rather remain in their homes. You are urged to take cover in a room without
windows (e.g. closet), move items off shelves that might fall on you, and cover yourself with
blankets. If you have special medical needs, you may register yearly for sheltering at and/or
transportation to a Special Needs Shelter in Manatee County with an impending hurricane
(http://www.mymanatee.org/home/government/departments/public-safety/emergencymanagement/special-needs.html ). These special needs may include oxygen dependency, more
serious mobility problems, and hospice care.
