BULLFROG
(sp. Lithobates catesbeianus)
The Bullfrog will eat about anything it can
fit down its throat. Even small mammals are
not out of the question. They can live up to
10 years. The female Bullfrog can lay up to
20,000 eggs. If you live near a pond, you
can hear them croaking at night from early
Spring well into Fall here in Rockport, but
there numbers aren’t what they use to be.
LORE: A female Bullfrog
has eardrums the same size
as their eyes, but a male’s
eardrums are larger.
Its native range was just below the Rio
Grande River, but due to Bullfrog farms that
were started in the 1920’s, it has been spread
across most of the U.S. and as far north as
Canada.
BLACK SPOTTED NEWT
(sp. Notophthalmus meridionalis)
It has been called the Texas Newt and is
very much a local native (a native of the
Texas Gulf Coast & Northeastern Mexico and hardly anyplace else), and it is
also an endangered Amphibian.
The Black Spotted Newt’s skin secretes
a toxic chemical that is a deterrent to
predators.
They are carnevours, and eat everything
from insects to other Amphibians.
