ART
THE SERAPHIM OF BACKSTAGE THEATRE IN PARIS, MAGASIN PITTORESQUE 1867.
IN ORDER FOR HUNDREDS TO SEE THE SHOW CLEARLY, PUPPETS WERE
CONSTRUCTED TO BE HUMAN SIZED AND THE MECHANISMS THEY WERE
CONTROLLED BY WERE VERY SOPHISTICATED FOR THE GIVEN TIME.
Used in religious rituals during the B.C. era, puppets later served
the purposes of entertainment and storytelling to show the effects of
migrations as the mingling of civilizations took place. The excavations
in Ancient Greece uncovered some of the first puppets, made from
clay, in these lands as well. Aristotle mentions puppetry in his works
saying that “People’s control on the puppets is similar to people’s
control on the world.” This reasoning led many Greek philosophers
to compare puppets with humans.
As the people of the Ancient Greece showed greater enthusiasm
for theatrical plays, they also show similar interest in puppet shows.
Storytellers visited village after village, and with their small budgets,
chose puppetry instead of theatre. In order for hundreds to see the
show clearly, puppets were constructed to be human sized and the
mechanisms they were controlled by were very sophisticated for
the given time. In these shows, the subjects were usually famous
philosophers, poets and political figures depicted with a touch of
humour.
