The first act starts while Adina is sitting beneath a tree on her
farm, reading a book, her friend Giannetta and a group of peasants
ask her to read to them. Then Adina reads them the story of how
Tristan won Isolde by drinking a magic love potion. Hearing the
story, Nemorino starts to think if such a love potion really exists.
At that moment, Sergeant Belcore, a rival, arrives and asks Adina
to marry him. But Adina laughs at him and says that she is not in
a hurry to get married. Seeing such a rival, Nemorino declares his
love for Adina clumsily. She tells him to stop mooning around
her but Nemorino tells her the only thing he wants is to love her.
In the village square, the populace eagerly greet the traveling
“Doctor” Dulcamara. Nemorino asks him if he has the Elixir of
Love. Dulcamara jumps into this business opportunity and gives
Nemorino a bottle of wine, telling him that it is the magical elixir.
Nemorino gulps it all down and naturally becomes tipsy. When
Adina enters to the scene, Nemorino, certain that the potion will
work, pretends to ignore her. Adina gets so surprised and angry at
his behavior, she starts to flirt with Belcore to punish Nemorino.
Belcore asks her to marry him again and she agrees. Nemorino
leaves the scene horrified.
