Rising Sea Levels June 2014 | Page 6

HOW ARE HUMANS EFFECTED?

Humans are being greatly affected by the rise in sea levels, whether it be through decrease in economy, destruction to homes, loss of coastal zones and islands or a multitude of other reasons. Humans have been the main reason for the extreme speed that the ocean has been rising, and although it is too late to stop it completely, it is still possible to help slow down the process (5). The main problem humans are facing with the rise is money and the economy. Damage and moving away from coastal zones and islands is expensive. It is calculated by Greenpeace that for every meter the sea level rising it will cost the U.S. over $156 billion. This creates enormous amounts of conflict because it is said that if it grows at the speed it is today, by 2100 damage alone will cost the word roughly 1/10 of it’s economy (10).
